The history of Throwball dates back to the early 20th century. The game is believed to have evolved from recreational ball games that were popular among women in England and Australia during the 1930s. These games involved throwing a ball across a net and were played mainly as leisure activities.
The sport was introduced in India through the YMCA College of Physical Education in Chennai (Madras) during the 1940s, where it was initially played as a women’s sport. Dr. Harry Crowe Buck, a pioneer of scientific physical education in India and founder of the YMCA College of Physical Education, played a crucial role in promoting the game and encouraging its development in educational institutions.
In 1955, Dr. Buck formally drafted the first set of guidelines and rules for Throwball, which helped transform the game from a recreational activity into a structured sport. During the following decades, the sport gradually spread from Chennai to Bangalore and other parts of southern India, gaining popularity in schools and colleges.
The Throwball Federation of India (TFI) was established in 1985 to provide a formal structure to the sport and organize national-level competitions. Since its inception, the TFI has been instrumental in standardizing the rules and promoting Throwball as a competitive sport for both men and women across the country.
Today, Throwball is one of the fastest-growing sports in India, with millions of players participating in various championships organized at state and national levels. The sport continues to evolve, with an increasing focus on professional development and international recognition.
